OTTO CATFISH

The otocinclus, also known as the otocinclus catfish from the Loricariidae family are a species of freshwater catfish indigenous to South America. They are also referred to as otto fish or ottos fish or with the spelling variation of oto fish. They also have an unofficial name called “dwarf suckers”. This has to do with their sucker-shaped mouths designed for them to feed on algae.

Since they are algae eaters, they are often added to a freshwater aquarium to help clean up the tank. Another amazing thing about the otocinclus is it’s a relatively low maintenance fish. Low maintenance usually equates to easy care and a suitable species for beginner aquarists. Otocinclus catfish like to dwell at the bottom of the aquarium so they are creatures that are easily hidden. Thanks to their markings, they can also easily blend in with the substrate.

STERBAI CORYDORAS

The Sterna Cory or Corydoras Sterbai is a member of the Corydoras catfish family. This particular species of catfish was first discovered in 1962 in South America by Dr. Günther Sterba and was named in his honor. The name Corydoras translates literally from Greek as Kory, meaning helmet, and doras, meaning skin.

You can identify these popular fish by the twin rows of armor plating that runs along Cory’s flanks. Also, the Corydoras Sterbai has fewer than ten dorsal fin rays. The fish’s head and body are dark brown in color, decorated with horizontal rows of white spots. The tail and fins are opaque with black spots.

JULII CORYDORAS

The julii cory is a nocturnal bottom dweller that will clean your tank with the sensitive barbels it uses to find food. It has the unique ability to rotate its eyes, so it appears to wink. Though cute, these diminutive catfish, also known as leopard catfish, have “armored” scutes and spikes that make them tough for bigger fish to eat.

Indigenous to the lower Amazon region, primarily the Parnaíba River of Brazil, Corydoras julii is found in flooded forest regions as well as in creeks and small tributaries.

Pepper Corydora

Pepper corys are small, peaceful fish that can help keep the bottom of your tank sparkling clean. They’re also fun, interesting pets that can vocalize during courtship. Another habit they have is “winking” at their owners; their articulated eyes allow them to tilt the eye down and back up without moving the head.

Like other corys, this species will sometimes dart to the surface of the water and appear to gulp air. They are able to use atmospheric oxygen, so it is normal to see them do this from time to time. Best kept in small groups, they’re a great addition to a community freshwater tank.

Yoyo Loach

The Yoyo Loach (Botia almorhae) is a freshwater fish that goes by many different names. You may seem them marketed as Almora Loaches, Lohahata Botia Loaches, and even Pakistani Loaches. The latter name is a bit inaccurate.

These fish actually hail from the Ganges basin in northern India. They’re also found throughout Nepal and surrounding areas. They are often confused with another similar-looking species found throughout Pakistan.

Kuhli Loach

Sometimes referred to as a Coolie Loach or Leopard Loach, the Kuhli Loach (Pangio kuhlii) is a unique tropical fish that hails from freshwater streams in Southeast Asia in areas like Malaysia, Thailand, and Borneo. They’re a part of the Cobitidae family. While they were first classified back in 1846, the Kuhli Loach has a very long history. These creatures are considered to be one of many Old World fish that were used as a source of food for early Indonesians.

Today, Kuhli Loaches are a staple in aquariums across the world. They maintain many of the same characteristics as they did in the wild. As such, they make an excellent addition to shared tanks.
